Activity percentage explained: what it means and does not

Updated October 9, 2026·1 min read
Short answer

Clockgauge's activity percentage is the number of tracked minutes with real input (typing, clicking, scrolling) or a counted call, divided by all tracked minutes. Work that involves thinking, reading, design review or meetings often scores lower than data entry, so use it to ask questions, not to rank people.

How it is calculated

Each tracked minute is active or not. Active means keyboard, clicks or scrolling happened, or a video call counted. Mouse movement alone counts for a short while and then not. The percentage is active minutes divided by tracked minutes.

Why jobs differ

WorkTypical pattern
Data entry, support ticketsHigh and steady
Writing, codingBursts with thinking gaps
Design review, readingLower, with long still stretches
MeetingsCounted through call detection

Using it well

  • Compare a person with their own past, not with colleagues in different jobs.
  • Look at trends, not single days.
  • Pair it with outputs: work delivered, tickets closed.

Questions to ask when a number looks low

  • Was the person in meetings or on calls?
  • Were they reading, reviewing or thinking?
  • Is the role one where keyboard activity is a poor proxy for output?
  • Did they forget to stop the timer?

Questions people ask

What is a good percentage?

There is no universal number. It depends on the role.
