An as-is sale means the dealer is not offering a warranty beyond what the law gives automatically. Many places restrict how dealers can use it, require the buyer to be told clearly, or imply some protections regardless. Document it in writing on the right form, show it consistently across the Buyers Guide, bill of sale and any disclosure, and keep a signed copy.
What it means and does not mean
As is generally means the buyer takes the car in its existing condition. It does not erase legal duties such as honest advertising, disclosure of known material facts, or statutory protections that cannot be waived. Dealers are usually held to more than private sellers.
Keep it consistent
- The advertisement, the Buyers Guide (US), the bill of sale and any as-is statement should agree.
- Use the form your region expects; some require a specific disclosure.
- Have the buyer sign and give them a copy.

A consistent paper trail
| Document | What it should say |
|---|---|
| Advertisement | Nothing that contradicts the as-is terms |
| Buyers Guide (US) | As is, if that is the sale |
| Bill of sale | The same as-is wording |
| Signed disclosure | Buyer's acknowledgement |
