How to add Chrome profiles to the Mac Dock

Short answer

The Dock has no way to pin a single Chrome profile: drag Chrome there and you get one icon covering every profile. To get an icon per profile you need a separate app for each, either a hand-made launcher or a tool such as Casement, which creates the icons for you and returns to the profile's existing window on click.

Why the Dock cannot do it alone

A Dock icon is a shortcut to an application, not to a state inside it. Chrome is one application, so the Dock has nothing to distinguish "Chrome, Work profile" from "Chrome, Personal profile". Chrome has no setting for profile shortcuts in the Dock either.

Option 1: a launcher you build yourself

Open Automator or Script Editor and make an application that runs this command, then drag it to the Dock:

open -na "Google Chrome" --args --profile-directory="Profile 1"

Change Profile 1 to the folder name of the profile you want. It works, with two catches: each click starts another window, because it asks the system to launch Chrome again, and the icon is generic, so you have to colour and name each one by hand.

Option 2: Casement

Casement lists your Chrome profiles in its menu-bar panel. Tick the ones you want and it adds a Dock icon for each, wearing the profile's photo. A click takes you back to the window that profile already has, and a new one opens only if it has none.

  1. Install Casement and allow Accessibility.
  2. Open Chrome profiles from the menu-bar icon.
  3. Choose the profiles that should appear in the Dock.

Option 3: standalone web apps

Tools that wrap Chrome as a separate app give you icons too, but each wrapper keeps its own copy of browser data, so you sign in again and keep two sets of history. That suits some jobs and not others; see the comparison of the methods.

Which option fits

If you…Consider
Have one or two profiles and do not mind a new window each timeA hand-made launcher
Want a fully separate browser state per appA standalone app wrapper
Want your existing profiles in the Dock and a click to return to the open windowCasement

Common problems

  • The icon opens the wrong profile: check the folder name with chrome://version and match it to the profile in the command.
  • A new window opens on every click: that is how launch-based shortcuts behave. Use a tool that focuses the existing window.
  • The Dock icon looks like plain Chrome: launchers need a custom icon you set yourself; Casement uses each profile's photo.

Questions people ask

Not by any outside tool. Safari offers outside tools no way to open or list its profiles.

Will it work with Chrome Beta or Canary?

Casement supports Chrome and its Beta, Dev and Canary builds.

Try Casement
