How to rename a Chrome profile

Updated October 9, 2026·1 min read
Short answer

Click your profile picture in Chrome, open the profile's settings (the gear or Customize profile option), type a new name and choose a colour and picture. The change shows in the toolbar, the Profiles menu and any Dock icon that uses the profile.

Steps

  1. Click the profile picture at the far right of the toolbar.
  2. Choose Customize profile or the gear icon.
  3. Type a new name, pick a colour theme and an avatar, then close the tab.

Why bother

Names and colours are how you tell windows apart at a glance. A bright colour per profile makes the frame of each window say Work, Personal or Client before you read anything.

The folder name does not change

Renaming changes the label, not the folder on disk. The profile is still stored as Profile 2 or similar. See where profiles are stored.

Naming tips

  • Use short, distinct names such as Work, Home or the client's name.
  • Pair each name with a strong, different colour; the colour shows in the window frame.
  • Pick a clear avatar. It becomes the Dock icon if you use profile icons.

If the name does not update everywhere

Close and reopen the profile's window. Dock icons made earlier by a launcher may keep the old label; Casement refreshes its icons when it notices the change.

Questions people ask

Will Dock icons update?

Casement refreshes profile icons when you change a profile's name or picture.

Can two profiles share a name?

Chrome allows it, but it makes them hard to tell apart.

Try Casement

Casement is a menu-bar app for Mac that puts each Chrome profile in the Dock as its own icon and adds snap layouts, hover-to-focus, a window switcher, Dock window lists, a drop shelf and display controls..
