Share files on a Mac by dragging to the top of the screen

Updated October 9, 2026·1 min read
Short answer

Casement's drop shelf opens when you drag a file toward the top of the screen and shows share targets such as AirDrop, Mail, Messages and Notes. Drop the file on one and macOS's normal share sheet for that service appears. Move away without letting go and the shelf closes.

The usual way

Control-click or right-click a file, choose Share, then pick a service. It is several steps for something you may do many times a day.

The shelf

  1. Drag any file toward the top of the screen.
  2. The shelf opens under the menu bar.
  3. Drop the file on AirDrop, Mail, Messages, Notes, Photos or another target.

What shows up

The shelf offers the share services your Mac already has. Add or remove them in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Extensions, Sharing; see the share menu is missing apps.

Everyday uses

  • AirDrop a photo to your phone: drag it up and drop on AirDrop.
  • Attach a PDF to a new email: drop it on Mail.
  • Send a file in a message: drop it on Messages.
  • Save a screenshot into a note: drop it on Notes.

If the shelf does not open

Make sure you are dragging a file, that Accessibility is allowed for Casement and that you are moving toward the top edge of the screen. Dragging a window opens snap layouts instead.
