The cleanest way to use two Google accounts at once is one Chrome profile per account. Each profile has its own cookies and logins, so they never collide. Add a Dock icon per profile so you can switch with one click and keep each profile's windows where they were.
Why profiles beat account switching
Google lets you add several accounts to one browser and switch between them in a menu. That works until a page picks the wrong account, an extension is tied to one of them, or you paste a link and it opens signed in as the other person. A profile is a separate browser state, so none of that happens.
Set it up
- In Chrome, click your profile picture and choose Add profile. Sign in with the first account, and repeat for the second.
- Give each profile a clear name and a different colour.
- Pin each profile to the Dock so it is one click away. See how to add Chrome profiles to the Dock.
Keeping them apart
- Use different colours so the window frame tells you which account you are in.
- Install extensions only in the profile that needs them.
- Bookmark client-specific pages in the matching profile.
Common mistakes
- Adding both accounts to one profile and relying on the account picker; links will sometimes open as the wrong one.
- Sharing extensions between work and personal profiles that should not see each other's data.
- Forgetting which window is which; fix it with colours and names.
Work and personal, a sample layout
| Profile | Colour | Holds |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Blue | Work Gmail, Calendar, Drive, company tools |
| Personal | Green | Personal Gmail, banking, shopping |
| Side project | Orange | Analytics, hosting, project accounts |
Give each a Dock icon so the profile you want is one click away from anywhere.
Questions people ask
How many profiles can I have?
Chrome does not set a small limit. In practice a handful is easy to manage.
Do profiles share passwords?
Only if you sign in to the same Google account in both and turn on sync.
Is a second profile the same as a second browser?
It behaves like one: separate cookies, logins and extensions. It is the same Chrome app, so you update and manage it once.
Try Casement
Casement is a menu-bar app for Mac that puts each Chrome profile in the Dock as its own icon and adds snap layouts, hover-to-focus, a window switcher, Dock window lists, a drop shelf and display controls..
