Move to a new computer without starting over

A new laptop should not mean re-pairing everyone.

Short answer

Settings, Back up now saves the database and, if you wish, screenshots to a folder encrypted with a password you choose. Restoring it on a new computer brings back people, pay, settings, the company name and every staff pairing, so employees reconnect without new codes. You can skip screenshots to keep the backup small.

What is in a backup

  • People, pay rates and payments.
  • Clients, projects, tasks and budgets.
  • Settings and the company name's keys.
  • Device pairings, so staff reconnect automatically.
  • Optionally, all screenshots.

The password

The backup asks for a password. It is the key to the backup, so keep it safe: without it, the backup cannot be opened, and we cannot reset it.

Moving computers

  1. Back up on the old computer.
  2. Install Clockgauge Host on the new one.
  3. Choose Restore on the first screen and pick the backup.
  4. Staff reconnect on their own.

Uninstalling

The Host offers a backup before uninstalling from its Settings.

A backup routine

  • Back up weekly at least, and before updating the Host.
  • Copy backups to a second place.
  • Test a restore on another computer once.

Questions people ask

What if I forget the backup password?

It cannot be recovered. Keep it in a password manager.

Does a paid licence move too?

Yes. Licences are tied to your email; use the same email on the new computer and the plan moves with you.
