A call is not idle time

Meetings are work. A person who is talking is not idle.

Short answer

With the option on, Clockgauge detects a video call by whether the microphone or camera is in use, a meeting app is open and sound is playing, and counts those minutes as active. A cap (60 minutes by default) stops a call left running from counting forever; minutes over the cap are flagged. Reports show call minutes. It never records what is said or shown.

How a call is recognised

Three signals together: the microphone or camera is on, a meeting app was used recently and sound is playing. All three reduce false positives from, say, music playing in the background.

The cap

A call that is left connected for hours should not count as work indefinitely. After the cap, minutes are flagged as "call over the limit" and are not counted as active. The default is 60 minutes in a row and you can change it.

Personal calls

The app cannot tell a work call from a personal one. That is why the cap exists, and why the consent screen explains the option. You can switch it off.

Reports

Reports show minutes on video calls for each person, project and day.

Setting it up

  1. In the Host's Settings, choose whether video calls count as active time.
  2. Set the cap in minutes (60 by default).
  3. Tell the team; the consent screen shows the option when it is on.

Reading the numbers

In reports, "call time" shows the minutes detected as video calls. Minutes beyond the cap are flagged and are not counted as active, so a call left open does not inflate a day.

Questions people ask

Does it listen to calls?

No. It only checks whether the mic or camera is on and sound is playing.

Can employees see this setting?

Yes. When on, the consent screen lists it.
