In Settings, choose Back up now. Clockgauge saves the database and, if you wish, screenshots to a folder encrypted with a password you choose. To move computers, back up on the old one, install Clockgauge Host on the new one, choose Restore on the first screen and pick the backup. Staff reconnect on their own.
Before you start
Choose a strong password for the backup and store it safely; without it the backup cannot be opened. You can skip screenshots to keep the file small.
Keep backups somewhere other than the Host computer.
Steps
- Open Settings and choose Back up now.
- Choose whether to include screenshots and set the password.
- Copy the backup folder to a second place.
- To move, install Clockgauge Host on the new computer.
- On the first screen choose Restore and pick the backup.
- Staff reconnect on their own; the company name and pairings are restored.
Check that it worked
People, pay rates, settings and the company name should all be present on the new Host.
If something goes wrong
- You forgot the backup password. It cannot be recovered; keep it in a password manager.
- Staff cannot reconnect. Check the new Host is on and online.
- The backup is huge. Skip screenshots or move older ones out.
What to do next
Read backup and restore and screenshot storage and retention.
A backup routine that works
- Back up on a fixed day each week and after any change to people or pay rates.
- Keep at least two copies in different places, one of them off site.
- Store the password in a password manager, separate from the backup.
- Test a restore on another computer once a quarter.
- Decide how much screenshot history you need to keep; they are the biggest part of a backup.
Planning a move to a new computer
Pick a quiet time, such as a weekend. Tell staff that the Host will be offline briefly: their apps will keep tracking and send the queued time when the Host returns. Back up, install on the new computer, restore, and watch the Team page as people reconnect. Keep the old computer untouched for a few days in case you need to look something up.
